Excerpt: In 1994, for the second consecutive year, Vermont ranked 46th among the 50 States in total nonfuel mineral value,1 after placing 45th in 13 of the previous 15 years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). The estimated value for 1994 was $48 million, a 12% decrease compared with that of 1993. This followed a nearly 9% decrease in 1993 from that of 1992. The State accounted for less than 0.5% of the U.S. total value. Decreases in dimension stone value in 1993 and 1994 accounted for most of the State's decreasing mineral value for the 2 years. Compared with that of 1993, the value for crushed stone increased in 1994. Decreases occurred for dimension stone, talc and pyrophyllite, construction sand and gravel, and asbestos.
